Preparing Your Car for a Road Trip

20 June, 2017

Before you venture on a road trip across the country or to a more distant location, you need to ensure that your car is in tip-top shape, ready to handle any tough terrain or inclement weather you may encounter.

Since most road trips take place in summer, our previous article on summer car care tips is an excellent starting point to guarantee that your vehicle is up to the task of a long journey. To sum up: Inspect your car fluid levels, your brakes and your battery. Change your oil and oil filter and keep an eye on your tire pressure.

Aside from these more general tips, a check of the vehicle’s hoses and belts is a must before hitting the open road or you may find yourself stranded in the desert.

Your choice of tire must also be appropriate for the terrain you plan to cover and the quality sufficient to survive the trip, or at least to bring you as far as the next tire vendor on your journey. Above all, do not forget to pack a spare tire or two. As they say, “Better safe than sorry”.

Before your trip, check your car lights, air conditioning system, wipers, air filter and gauges and double check that you have a map packed if your trip is more off- than on-road and keep extra fuses and oil on hand and an emergency kit close by.
